Joanna Jedrzejczyk announces retirement after Zhang Weili knocks her out with a spinning backfist

Former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is retiring after her vicious KO loss to Weili Zhang in UFC 275. Despite looking battered and bruised following her rematch with Weili Zhang, many believed that former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk had done enough to win. Still, they ultimately fell to the Chinese superstar’s vicious knockout. In one of the best fights to date this year, Zhang Weili defeated Poland’s former UFC strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, via knockout in the second round at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Former UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili delivered a stunning backfist spinning takedown on Joanna Jedrzejczyk and then finished off her Polish opponent.

Appearing to retreat toward the Octagon when Jedrzejczyk charged forward, ex-UFC strawweight champion Zhang Weili unleashed a spinning back fist knockout, leaving the veteran face-planted and momentarily unresponsive when the referee waved off the Fight. A smooth spinning back fist from Zhang Weili found its way home on the jaw of Jedrzejczyk in round two, sending the 34-year-old to the canvas.

Zhang Weili, who holds the UFC Strawweight Championship, finished Joanna Jedrzejczyk midway through round two with a vicious spinning back fist, a bout which lived up at the time to their original Fight of the Year bout from 2020. Zhang Weili had worked out for Henry Cejudo and had been involved in both title bouts while Joanna Jedrzejczyk was out, seeing improvements in the Chinese fighter, which may have helped give her an edge at UFC. Zhang Weili was defeated twice by former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas before their rematch at UFC 275. At the same time, Joanna Jedrzejczyk has not fought since their first meeting with Magnum, being removed from UFC 275s rankings for lack of activity.

The pair had clashed in 2020, which was the Fight of the year, and their second Fight in the Singapore Indoor Stadium at UFC 275 did not disappoint, either. More than two years later, the pair met once more in the main event of UFC 275 in Singapore and delivered yet another classic. The ultimate revenge bout was to be the final Fight for former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who removed her gloves as is tradition for fighters who announce retirements within the Octagon and then opened up about her decision during her post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.

After two decades in mixed martial arts and losing by a brutal knockout, the Polish fighter announced her retirement from professional sports. Jedrzejczyk, who is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary women’s fighters in MMA, said that she was leaving the mark following her devastating knockout loss against Zhang Weili at UFC 275 in Singapore.
